I was having a look at the history of the Luna 9 space probe today, which made the first soft landing on the moon, or any other world come to that, 50 years ago. Assuming we ever colonize the moon I'm sure these artifacts ( and there's quite a few of them by now) will be of great interest. Maybe there'll even be a lunar museum eventually. But I was wondering what effect the lunar environment might have on such objects? Luna 9 itself returned the first radiation level, that of 30 millrads. Though that's quite a low rate, it's been there 50 years. So what, if any, would be the effect of radiation and other environmental factors such as UV, have on the materials? I know that metals can harden and creep under the effect of radiation. I imagine alloys were used a lot in constructing them, probably not much steel due to weight constraints. Any thoughts welcome Julian
